SHS soccer squads look toward post-season play

By Greg Perkins

With just two weeks left in the regular soccer season, both Snowflake teams are positioning themselves for a possible post-season berth.

The Lobos enter this week ranked third in power points after picking up a 2-0 road win last Wednesday at Show Low.

Today (Oct. 11) they host St. Johns, then will close out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 17, when they host Page.

The top eight teams in the boys’ rankings will make the post season. Chino Valley is number one, followed by Blue Ridge and Snowflake. Show Low is ranked sixth. If the Lobos can pick up wins in their final two matches, they will be headed to the post-season. In fact, they may only need to win one of those two to make it.

The Lady Lobos have a little more work to do to extend their season.

Hosting St. Johns on Tuesday of last week, the Lady Lobos won a 1-0 decision.  Kaddie Kay used an assist from Elaine Zook to score the only goal of the game. Emily Rolow preserved the shutout win with 11 saves in goal for Snowflake.

On Saturday the Lady Lobos suffered a setback, a 5-0 loss at Round Valley.

After playing at Holbrook on Monday, they will have back-to-back games against seventh ranked Blue Ridge. The first of those will be in Snowflake on Thursday, Oct. 12, and the second in Lakeside on Tuesday, Oct. 17.  Their final game will be played on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when they host Show Low.

Only four teams make the post-season in girls’ fall soccer. The Lady Lobos are currently No. 6 in the rankings.  Show Low is fourth and Blue Ridge is seventh, so the team needs to earn some wins in the final three matches to make the post-season.
