The 21st ranked Roadrunners went into Winslow on Tuesday night and gave the second ranked Bulldogs all they could handle before coming up short in a 51-48 final outcome. Winslow looked the part of a top ranked team in the first period going against Holbrook who was missing it’s two starting guards due to illness. The Dawgs doubled up Holbrook in the first eight minutes and it looked like it would be a long night for Roadrunner fans. Emerson Begay netted four of his team high 15 in the second but the Roadrunners still trailed by double digits at the half.
In the third period the tide began to turn. Freshmen Anthony Nelson hit two treys, Tyrell Nelson and Terrence Kelly each added one from distance and Holbrook outscored Winslow by 10 in the frame and headed to the fourth period trailing by one point. Holbrook got a lead at 48 to 47 late in the game, but a couple of turnovers allowed Winslow to pull ahead and ice the game on Ricardo Villanuevea’s free throws at the end.
Holbrook was led by Begay with 15. Anthony Nelson added 11; Kelly, 9; Josiah Freddie, 5; Tyrell Nelson, 4; and Jaren Jackson added four as well. Holbrook made eight of nine free throws and connected on six three-point shots.
Winslow was led by Villanueva and Darius James each with 11. Zachary Wagner added 10; Dakota Spencer, 5; Theron Olney, 4; Isaac Benale, 4; and Skylar Barlow helped with 3. The Bulldogs made eight of 15 foul shots and hit five shots from behind the arc.
With the loss Holbrook dropped to 13-15 overall and 3-14 in ranked games. They played their final regular season game on Friday night when they hosted Payson.
