Saturday evening, Aug. 19, saw the Family Life Center of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Holbrook filled to capacity with an attentive and appreciative crowd for Some Enchanted Evening, a night of music featuring some of the area’s finest musicians performing songs from musicals throughout the decades.  In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Painted Desert Kiwanis Club, all proceeds from the evening were dedicated to the club’s scholarship fund, which annually provides tuition assistance to four to six students seeking higher education.

“What a great night!” effused Twyla Taylor, one of approximately 20 Kiwanians who hosted the event.  “This was Holbrook at its best,” added Rick Taylor, Twyla’s husband.

“Impressive!  That is the best word to describe Saturday night!” wrote Dr. Robbie Korperich, superintendent of the Holbrook Public Schools, in an after-event email to several of the district’s faculty and staff who performed in the show or provided technical assistance.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the way this dream became reality,” commented Jeff Johnson, another Kiwanian and organizer of the event.

Featuring both vocalists and instrumentalists, mostly from Holbrook, but also from neighboring Joseph City and Snowflake, and even one former Holbrook resident now living in Springerville, Some Enchanted Evening provided an enthusiastic audience with top-notch entertainment, including several sing-along numbers.

“I think everyone went home happy,” remarked Bill Jeffers, the only still active Kiwanian from when Holbrook’s club was established 40 years ago.  “We set out to give people a good show, and we did!”

An example of the support and success of the event was shown by a profit of $4,101.03 for scholarships.
