Margarita Marquez Castillo, 107, of Phoenix passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, in Phoenix. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Samaritan Funeral Home in Phoenix. Funeral services and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery at 2033 N. 48th St. in Phoenix.
She was born June 9, 1910, to Jeronimo and Florentina Chavez Marquez in Vaughn, N.M.
Margarita was married in the Catholic Church at a young age to the love of her life, Santiago Castillo, and made residence in Phoenix.
She helped different family members by caring for their children from time to time. She took in her sister Theresa’s oldest son, Benjamin “Benny” Wade, for years during a family illness. Since then, Benny loved his Aunt Margarita so much he was like a son to her. Most of Benny’s children called Margarita “Nana.”
Margarita had no children of her own, but is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Santiago “Jim” Castillo (Phoenix); her mother, Florentina Chavez Marquez, and her father, Jeronimo Marquez, (Holbrook); two brothers, Lazaro Marquez (Holbrook) and Clifford Marquez (Flagstaff); and two sisters, Delfina Marquez Jacques and Theresa Marquez Wade (Holbrook).
Margarita lived longer than any family member on the Chavez or Marquez side. She will be dearly missed by many people.
