Lobos earn fifth seed heading into 3A state tournament

By Greg Perkins

Snowflake’s boys team earned the fifth overall seed and a first round bye in the upcoming 3A state tournament. As the No. 5 seed they will face either No. 12 Empire or No. 21 Show Low tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 14) at a neutral site determined by the AIA.

The Lobos finished the regular season with an overall record of 19-12. They finished region play tied for first place along with Blue Ridge and Winslow, but fell to third via tiebreakers. As the third seed in the region tournament they hosted sixth seeded Payson in the first round of the east region tournament at home on Feb. 6 and came away with a relatively easy 73-45 win to advance to the semi-final round against Blue Ridge on Feb. 8.

In that contest the Lobos came up short losing to the Yellowjackets 69-56. That loss put the Lobos into the third place game, which they captured with a 61-38 home court win over Show Low on Feb. 9.

The 3A east region is very well represented in the final 3A state bracket.  The top overall seed is Blue Ridge. Winslow is the second overall seed, and the Lobos are No. 5, Show Low is ranked 21st and the Holbrook Roadrunners are sitting at No. 22.
