A Pinetop-Lakeside police officer was shot and his assailant was found dead after an altercation in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 9.
The incident began after the department received a phone call from a woman in Tucson asking for a welfare check on her son Glenn Southwood, 46, who was at a residence in the 1900 block of West Gardner Lane in Lakeside. She told officers that she believed Sherwood was intoxicated and had threatened to shoot his wife, who may have been locked in a bathroom at the residence.
Officers responded to the residence and after a verbal confrontation with Southwood, he produced a firearm and began shooting at officers. The officers returned fire and Southwood barricaded himself in the house.
One of the officers was shot in his right leg just above the knee. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported in stable condition. His name had not been released as of press time.
The Show Low Regional Special Response Team (SRT) was called to the scene and made entry into the house. At approximately 3:30 a.m., Southwood was discovered dead on a side porch of the residence. As of press time, no information had been provided regarding the cause of Sherwood’s death or the welfare of his wife.
During the officers’ entry to the home, a police K-9 was attacked by a pit bull and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
