After going 3-1 at the Queen Creek Tournament prior to Thanksgiving, the Lady Lobos dropped their regular season opening game to visiting Chinle on Tuesday night of last week.
The Wildcats built a seven-point lead after the first period, then expanded that margin to 15 with a big second quarter. Neither team scored well in the third, but Chinle went on to win the game by twenty at 58-38.
Emily Ballard and Nikita Olms did their part combining for 25 points with Ballard leading the way with 14. Camaria Reidhead added 4; Shelby Larson 3, Bailee Flake 2, Taryn Flake 2; and Kaylee Coplan also finished with 2. Snowflake struggled from the field shooting just 27 percent for the game.
Following that loss the Lobos were busy with five games played at the Sedona Red Rock tournament held on Friday and Saturday. Their first of three games on Friday was a 39-19 win over Greyhills. The Lobos led by 12 at the half and outscored the Knights by eight in the second half. Emily Ballard led the way with nine and Olms added eight.
Next up was Westwood, which defeated Snowflake 48-37. The Lobos trailed by just five at the break, but couldn’t outscore the Warriors in the second half. Ballard led the charge with 15 points and Olms helped out with 12.
Friday’s third game was a 39-24 win over Mingus. Neither team scored well in the first half, but Snowflake was on top 13-7 at the break. In the second half the Lobos heated up netting 26 points to get the 15-point win. Olms found her shooting stroke making four treys as part of her team high 16-point output. Bailee Flake added 8 in the win.
The Lobos played just twice on Saturday with the first game being an easy 52-21 win over Pinon. Snowflake’s defense held the Eagles to just seven second half points in the victory. Olms led with 16 points, and Kaylee Coplan scored well with 13.
Snowflake’s final game of the tournament was a 51-39 loss to the host team Sedona.
After hosting Tuba City on Tuesday of this week the Lady Lobos will have eight days off to prepare for their trip to face the Lady Scouts in Window Rock next Wednesday. Two days after that they will travel to face Florence.
Snowflake is currently 6-4 on the season and 0-1 in power point contests.
