Joan Marie Rivera (also known as Joanie, Bones, Booger, Freight, Roadrunner, JBFOM, JR…), who had just celebrated her 50th birthday with many friends and family, passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017. Joan furiously battled pancreatic cancer for the past 8 months.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, at Winslow Funeral Home, with Steve Garnett of St. Paul A.M.E. Church officiating. Interment will follow at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Hubbell Building following the service and interment.
Joan was born Aug. 20, 1967, in Winslow.
Joan married her husband Mike on July 17, 1993; they were happily married for 24 years.
Survivors include her husband, Michael A. Rivera Sr.; her children, Michael Anthony Rivera Jr., Melanie Reese Rivera, Audrey Rochelle Rivera and Kristalyn Danielle Rivera; her mother, Catherine Reese Varner; her mother-in-law, Linda R. Ruiz; her brother Steve Varner and his wife Theresa and son Robert; her sister Cheryl Jordan and her husband Martin and daughter Laura; her granddaughter Amiah Mercedes Rivera-Utley and her grandson Greyson Michael Rivera; and so very many family and friends who loved her dearly and who were at her side during her battle with cancer, including her beloved “blue family” and every member of Team 252.
Joan was preceded in death by her father, Robert W. Varner Jr.; her father-in-law, Robert C. Rivera; her grandmother, Priscilla Bowman; and her grandfather-in-law Frank “Beemps” Rivera.
