The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Wildcats 48-8 in Chinle last Friday night and the Page Sand Devils for Homecoming the previous weekend, 40-20. The wins improved Winslow’s record to 3-0.
With nine minutes gone in the first quarter at Chinle the Bulldogs struck paydirt on an eight-yard run by Brennan Sawyer followed by a two-point pass from Ricardo “Junior” Villanueva to Sawyer to make the lead 8-0. With just 20 seconds left in the first Damon Avelar intercepted a Wildcat pass and ran it in for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Villanueva connected with Sawyer on an eight-yard pass for another touchdown, bringing the score to 20-0. With 4:41 left in the half Villanueva found Yoann Djassa on a short pass for a touchdown, then ran it in for two points to bring the halftime score to 28-0.
Midway through the third quarter Villanueva completed a short pass to Jalen Lyons for yet another touchdown and a 34-0 edge. At the three minute mark Villanueva scored on a 30-yard run and passed to Lyons for the two-point conversion. Winslow held a commanding 42-0 lead.
The fourth quarter started with a running clock and with nine minutes left, Wildcat Juan Curley put Chinle on the board with a three-yard run for a touchdown. The conversion pass from Antwan Grey to Cooper Burbank was good, bringing the score to 42-8.
Djassa returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, giving Winslow a 48-8 victory over Chinle.
Against Page Sept. 8, the Sand Devils got a first down on their first possession, but lost a fumble to Noah Upchurch of Winslow near midfield. The Bulldogs marched into a threatening position.
The Bulldogs scored on a one-yard run by Mikel Bonner with more than seven minutes left in the first quarter. The 48-yard drive was all on running plays. Avalar booted the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Page had good field position after a bad snap caused Winslow’s punter to run the ball and took the ball inside the Winslow 30.
Page quarterback Jacob Doyle ran two yards for the touchdown that cut the Winslow lead to 7-6 when the conversion run failed. The score came with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.
Page recovered a Winslow fumble and was inside the Winslow 20 yard line when the first quarter ended with Winslow leading 7-6.
The Bulldogs took the ball on downs after the first play of the second quarter.
Winslow scored on an 81-yard pass from Villanueva to Djassa. The conversion was booted by Sawyer and gave the Bulldogs a 14-6 margin with 10 minutes left in the half.
Sawyer intercepted a Page pass at the Winslow 25.
The Bulldogs scored quickly again on a 65-yard pass from Villanueva to Lyons, then booted the conversion for a 21-6 lead.
Upchurch took the ball away from the Page ball carrier and Villanueva passed 27 yards to Djassa for the touchdown. The conversion failed and Winslow led 27-6 with about four minutes left in the half, and that score stood until the teams went to the locker rooms.
Page recovered an onside kickoff to start the second half. Kele Meredith ran one yard for the touchdown and a conversion pass from Doyle to Austin Green cut the Winslow lead to 27-14 with about nine minutes left in the third quarter.
After a couple of possessions, Page lost another fumble to the Bulldogs. Winslow drove to inside the Page 20 yard line. The Bulldogs scored on a 16-yard pass from Villanueva to Bonner, who made a spectacular one-handed catch.
Villanueva intercepted a Page pass and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown. Avalar converted for a 40-14 lead. That was the score entering the fourth quarter.
Page continued to have trouble with fumbles and Djassa recovered one of them.
After getting the ball back, Doyle passed 18 yards to Justin Salabiye for a Page touchdown. The conversion failed and Winslow led 40-20 with two minutes left to play. That score stood as the final.
The Bulldogs will be on the road on Friday, Sept. 15, when they journey to Tuba City to meet the Warriors.
